Introductory summary
Types of meningitis: bacterial, viral, tuberculous, fungal and non-infectious, and why the type matters.
Meningitis is grouped by what causes it. The type decides how fast treatment is needed and what medicine is used.
Bacterial meningitis
The most dangerous. It can cause death or lasting harm within hours or days. It needs urgent antibiotics in hospital. Common causes are pneumococcus, meningococcus, Hib and, in newborns, group B Streptococcus.
Viral meningitis
More common and usually milder. Most people recover in 7 to 10 days with rest and fluids. Herpes viruses may need an antiviral medicine.
Tuberculous meningitis
Caused by TB bacteria. It develops over weeks, with fever, headache, vomiting and confusion. It needs a long course of TB medicines and is common in India.
Fungal meningitis
Rare and seen mainly in people with weak immunity, such as HIV. Needs long antifungal treatment.
Parasitic and amoebic meningitis
Very rare. Often linked to contaminated water.
Non-infectious meningitis
Due to some medicines, autoimmune disease, cancer or head injury.
Other ways it is described
- Acute: develops in hours to days, typical of bacterial disease
- Chronic: develops over weeks, typical of TB and fungal disease
- Meningoencephalitis: infection that also involves the brain itself
Ayurvedic view
Traditional texts describe head and neck conditions by Dosha. These groups are not the same as modern types.
Key point
Only tests on blood and spinal fluid can tell the type, which is why hospital care is needed.
Key point
Bacterial and TB meningitis are the types that most often cause lasting harm, so testing early matters.
