Diet and Food Guidance for nerve pain

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet for nerve pain: vitamin B12, balanced meals, blood sugar control and what to limit.

Food cannot cure nerve damage, but good nutrition protects nerves and helps treat common causes such as diabetes and vitamin deficiency.

Vitamin B12

B12 is essential for nerves. Dairy, eggs, fish, meat and fortified foods contain it. Vegetarians and vegans, older adults, and people on metformin or long-term acid-reducing medicines are more likely to be low. Ask a doctor for a blood test and treatment if levels are low.

Other nutrients

  • Folate and B6: green leafy vegetables, pulses and whole grains. Very high doses of B6 supplements can harm nerves, so avoid taking more than advised.
  • Vitamin D and magnesium: nuts, seeds, whole grains and sunlight
  • Protein: dal, pulses, eggs, fish and dairy

If you have diabetes

  • Choose whole grains, vegetables and pulses, with less sugar and refined flour
  • Keep meals regular and follow your doctor's plan
  • Good sugar control slows nerve damage

Limit

  • Alcohol, which damages nerves
  • Sugary drinks and heavily processed food
  • Very salty and fried food

Water

Drink enough water through the day unless restricted by a doctor.

Special cases

  • Pregnancy: take supplements only as advised
  • Older adults: check B12 and vitamin D
  • Infants: no honey under 12 months

Remember

A balanced diet supports nerve health. Check B12 and blood sugar rather than guessing, and avoid mega-dose supplements.

When to get help

See a doctor if you have burning, tingling or numbness that lasts, spreads or is linked to diabetes, or if there is weakness. Do not self-medicate for long periods, avoid unknown herbal products, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
