Diet and Food Guidance for obsessive-compulsive disorder

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet and OCD: balanced eating, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and what diet cannot do.

No food or diet treats OCD. A healthy eating pattern supports energy, mood and sleep, and can make therapy easier to follow.

Eating well

  • Regular meals, and avoid skipping breakfast
  • Whole grains, fruit, vegetables, pulses and nuts
  • Protein from dal, eggs, fish, chicken, paneer and curd
  • Foods rich in omega-3 such as fish, walnuts and flaxseed
  • Enough water through the day

Things to limit

  • Caffeine: tea, coffee and energy drinks can raise anxiety and worsen sleep
  • Alcohol: worsens anxiety and interacts with psychiatric medicines
  • Tobacco
  • Excess sugar and ultra-processed food, which cause energy swings

Check for deficiencies

If you feel tired or low, ask a doctor about tests for vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron and thyroid. Correct low levels as advised, but do not expect supplements to treat OCD.

Watch out for food rituals

OCD can cause food-related fears, such as fear of contamination or strict rules about food. If food rules are limiting eating or causing weight loss, tell your doctor.

Medicines and food

Some psychiatric medicines affect appetite, weight or blood sugar. Your doctor can advise on diet and weight monitoring.

Special cases

  • Pregnancy: eat a balanced diet and take supplements only as advised
  • Children and teens: growing bodies need regular balanced meals
  • Infants: no honey under 12 months

Remember

Diet supports wellbeing but does not replace therapy and medicines.

When to get help

See a psychiatrist or psychologist if thoughts and rituals take more than an hour a day, cause distress or limit your life. Do not stop or replace prescribed medicines with herbs, and do not give herbs or home remedies to children without a paediatrician's advice. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call 112 or Tele-MANAS at 14416 in India.
