Ayurvedic treatment for osteoporosis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of osteoporosis as Asthi-kshaya, traditional diet and herbs, and limits of evidence.

In Ayurveda, bone loss is discussed as Asthi-kshaya (wasting of bone tissue) and is linked with aggravated Vata. This page describes the traditional approach. It is an interpretive framework, evidence from good trials is limited, and it should be used as an adjunct to, not a substitute for, medical care.

Traditional understanding

Vata is thought to be dry, light and cold, and to dominate older age. When Vata increases and digestion (Agni) is weak, bone tissue is said to be poorly nourished and to become brittle.

Approaches commonly used

  • Diet: warm, fresh meals with milk or its alternatives, sesame, ghee in moderation, nuts, and ragi
  • Abhyanga: warm oil massage, avoiding broken skin and being careful on slippery floors afterwards
  • Basti therapies: medicated enema treatments, only under a qualified practitioner
  • Herbs often mentioned: Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Laksha (Lac), Guggulu, Asthishrinkhala (Cissus quadrangularis) and Arjuna

What research says

Small studies of Cissus quadrangularis and some formulas show possible benefit on fracture healing or bone markers. Evidence for preventing fractures is not established.

Safety

Herbs can interact with blood thinners, diabetes, thyroid and blood pressure medicines. Some products contain heavy metals. Do not stop prescribed bone medicines. Tell your doctor about all products you take.

See a doctor if you have a fall injury, sudden back pain or a suspected fracture.

Remember

Ayurveda can support diet and routine, but DEXA, calcium, vitamin D and proven medicines remain the base of care.
