Paget's disease in special cases (pregnancy, children, elderly)

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Paget's disease of bone in older adults, pregnancy and children, and family screening.

Paget's disease of bone mainly affects older adults. Special situations need extra thought and a specialist's advice.

Older adults

  • It is most often found after age 55 to 60, usually by chance
  • Falls are a major risk, and weak bone can break more easily. Home safety, vision checks and balance work help.
  • Hip or knee arthritis may need physiotherapy, pain relief or joint replacement. Surgery on an affected bone needs planning, as bleeding may be increased.
  • Kidney function and calcium are checked before bisphosphonate treatment
  • Hearing tests are advised when the skull is affected

Pregnancy

Paget's disease is very rare in women of childbearing age. Bisphosphonates are generally avoided in pregnancy and in those planning pregnancy, because they stay in bone for a long time. Pain relief and calcium and vitamin D are discussed with an endocrinologist or obstetrician.

Children

True Paget's disease of bone does not occur in childhood. Rare inherited conditions with a similar picture, such as juvenile Paget's disease, are different and need a paediatric bone specialist.

Family members

Close relatives of a person with the disease may have a higher chance. Some doctors offer ALP testing from about age 40. Ask your doctor.

Ayurvedic view

Gentle diet, oil massage and routine may support well-being in older people. Avoid forceful massage or manipulation over painful or bowed bones. This is a supportive framework and does not treat the disease.

See a doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy with a known bone disease, or an older relative has unexplained bone pain.

Remember

Care is planned around age and health. Tell every doctor who treats you that you have Paget's disease.
