Diet and food guidance for ringworm

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet guidance to support skin healing and prevent repeat ringworm.

Diet does not treat ringworm directly, because it is a surface fungal infection treated with antifungal medicine. Good nutrition can still support skin repair and immunity, and a few dietary habits help in people who get repeated infections.

Foods that support skin and immunity

  • Protein sources such as dal, eggs, fish, paneer and lean meat for skin repair.
  • Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, C and E, such as papaya, carrots, citrus, spinach and bell pepper.
  • Zinc sources such as pumpkin seeds, nuts, chickpeas and whole grains.
  • Curd or other probiotic foods, which may support general gut and immune health, though no strong evidence shows they treat ringworm.
  • Plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated.

Foods to limit

  • Sugary drinks and sweets, particularly if you have diabetes, since high blood sugar makes fungal infections more frequent and harder to clear.
  • Highly processed and fried food.
  • Alcohol, which can add to liver stress if oral antifungals are prescribed.

If you take antifungal tablets Some tablets, such as terbinafine, griseofulvin, fluconazole or itraconazole, may be taken with fatty food for better absorption or have specific food advice. Follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid alcohol during treatment unless told it is safe.

Diabetes and weak immunity Keeping blood sugar in range is one of the most useful things you can do to prevent recurring ringworm.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda advises avoiding heavy, oily, sour and fermented foods with skin disease and favouring light, bitter foods such as bitter gourd and leafy greens. This is a traditional guideline with limited research support.

Remember A balanced diet helps the body heal, but the infection itself needs proper antifungal treatment and good hygiene.
