Introductory summary

How to prevent ringworm with hygiene, dry skin and clean clothes.

Ringworm is very common, but you can lower the chance of getting it or passing it on with a few simple habits. These matter most in hot, humid weather.

Keep your skin clean and dry

  • Bathe daily, and dry well, especially skin folds, groin and between the toes.
  • Change out of sweaty or wet clothes as soon as possible, including gym clothes and socks.
  • Use antifungal powder in shoes or on sweaty areas if you are prone to infection.

Choose the right clothes Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing and avoid tight synthetic fabrics. Alternate shoes so they dry fully.

Do not share personal items Towels, combs, hats, clothes, razors, bedding and sports gear can carry the fungus. Wash them in hot water if someone in the house is infected.

Protect your feet in shared spaces Wear slippers or sandals in public showers, pools, gyms and hostel bathrooms.

Care for pets Check pets for patchy hair loss or scaly skin, and treat infected animals with a vet. Wash your hands after handling animals.

Treat infection early Treat any new patch quickly to avoid spreading it to other body areas or family members. Complete the whole course of treatment.

Control health conditions Keep blood sugar in range if you have diabetes, and review long-term steroid use with your doctor.

Schools and sports Children with ringworm should avoid sharing caps, combs and sports kits until treated. Wrestling and contact-sport athletes should shower after practice and check skin regularly.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Traditional advice stresses cleanliness, dry skin and light food. These match common hygiene advice and are supportive only.

Remember Hygiene and dry skin prevent most ringworm. Never keep wearing damp clothes.
