How to Treat Bronchitis

Introductory summary
How bronchitis is actually treated: rest and honey for acute, inhalers and rehab for chronic - step by step.
Treatment splits by type. Acute bronchitis mostly needs time, rest and symptom care - not antibiotics. Chronic bronchitis (COPD) needs sustained, supervised treatment. Here is how each is actually handled.
Acute bronchitis: what treatment looks like
- Rest and fluids: sleep is repair; warm fluids thin mucus and soothe the raw throat
- Symptom relief: paracetamol for fever and ache; honey in warm water for the cough (adults and children over 1 year only); steam or a humidifier for comfort
- Skip the antibiotic: typical acute bronchitis is viral - antibiotics do not speed it up and do cause side effects and resistance. If a doctor examines you and prescribes one for a specific reason (pertussis, pneumonia), that is different
- Inhaler if wheezy: doctors often give a short course of a bronchodilator (salbutamol) inhaler when wheeze is prominent - it opens airways; it is not a steroid and not habit-forming
- Watch the clock: improving by week 2-3? Fine. Worse, febrile, breathless, or coughing past 3 weeks? Back to the doctor - pneumonia, pertussis, TB and asthma all enter the list
Chronic bronchitis / COPD: the real program
- Stop the exposure: quitting smoking or switching off biomass fuel is the treatment everything else builds on
- Inhalers: bronchodilators (LABA/LAMA) as daily maintenance; steroid inhalers for those with frequent flare-ups - technique matters, ask to be taught
- Pulmonary rehabilitation: supervised exercise and breathing training - one of the most effective therapies in COPD, widely underused
- Vaccines: flu yearly, pneumococcal, COVID - flare-up prevention
- Oxygen: for advanced disease with low blood oxygen, prescribed and monitored
- Flare-up plan: know your rescue routine - a sudden increase in breathlessness, sputum volume or pus-like sputum usually means a short course of steroids and sometimes antibiotics, under a doctor's direction. Severe breathlessness is an emergency (112 / 102)
The classical layer
Classical treatment of Kasa began with removing the cause (smoke, dust, diet errors), then soothed and strengthened: warm diet, honey-and-spice preparations, and formulations like Sitopaladi and Talisadi churna - reasonable as comfort measures alongside the plan above, from licensed products, disclosed to your doctor. For chronic disease the texts were modest about cures; so are we. The comfort layer supports - it never replaces - inhalers and rehabilitation.
One-line summary
Acute bronchitis: rest, fluids, honey, patience, no routine antibiotics. Chronic bronchitis: quit the smoke, daily inhalers, pulmonary rehab, vaccines, and a flare-up plan with your doctor.
