Introductory summary

Bronchitis symptoms: the mucusy cough, chest soreness, wheeze, how long it lasts - and the red flags that need a doctor.

The hallmark of bronchitis is a cough that brings up mucus. Everything else clusters around it. Knowing the ordinary course - and the red flags that break the pattern - tells you when to wait and when to see a doctor.

Acute bronchitis: the typical picture

  • Cough: the dominant symptom - dry at first, then productive within a few days
  • Mucus (sputum): clear, white, yellow or green. Colored mucus alone does NOT mean bacterial infection - it is your immune cells doing their job, not an automatic antibiotic signal
  • Chest discomfort: a raw, sore feeling behind the breastbone, worse with coughing
  • Wheeze and mild breathlessness: from narrowed, mucus-coated airways
  • Low fever, body ache, sore throat, runny nose: the cold it rode in on
  • Course: most symptoms settle in 7-10 days; the cough itself commonly lingers 3 weeks, sometimes up to 8 - an annoying but normal tail

For a clear reference on the usual course, see the NHS bronchitis guide: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bronchitis/

Chronic bronchitis: the long pattern

  • Daily mucus cough, most mornings, for months every year
  • Gradually increasing breathlessness - first on exertion, then at rest
  • Frequent "chest colds" that hit harder and last longer than other people's
  • Wheeze, chest tightness, fatigue

Red flags - see a doctor promptly

  • High fever (above 100.4 F / 38 C) or fever lasting beyond 3 days - suggests pneumonia or flu, not simple bronchitis
  • Breathlessness at rest, rapid breathing, chest pain
  • Blood in the mucus
  • Cough beyond 3 weeks, or one that keeps getting worse instead of better
  • Symptoms in someone with asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, or weak immunity; in adults over 65; in infants
  • Bluish lips or confusion - an emergency: call 112 / 102

The classical note

Classical texts separated coughs by their texture - dry and hacking (Vataja Kasa), burning with yellow sputum (Pittaja), heavy with thick white mucus (Kaphaja), the cough of chest injury (Kshataja), and the wasting cough (Kshayaja). The useful instinct: a cough's character and company (fever, weight loss, blood) matter as much as its presence.

One-line summary

A mucusy cough after a cold that improves over 1-3 weeks is ordinary bronchitis; high fever, breathlessness, blood, or a cough that overstays 3 weeks is a doctor's visit.
