Introductory summary
Candidiasis symptoms: white mouth patches, itchy white discharge, fold rashes with satellite spots - and red flags.
Candidiasis announces itself differently by site - but itching, white patches and soreness are the recurring theme.
Oral thrush
- Creamy white patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth - wipeable, leaving a red, sometimes bleeding base
- Soreness, burning, altered taste
- Cracking at the mouth corners (angular cheilitis)
- In denture wearers: redness under the plate, often without obvious white patches
- In babies: white mouth patches plus feeding fussiness
Vaginal candidiasis
- Intense itching and irritation of the vulva
- Thick, white, curd-like discharge - typically NOT foul-smelling (a foul smell suggests something else)
- Redness, soreness, burning on passing urine or during sex
- Vulval swelling in stronger episodes
Skin-fold candidiasis (intertrigo)
- Bright red, moist, itchy patches in groin, under breasts, underarms, between buttocks
- Characteristic small satellite spots around the main patch
- Soreness and maceration; in diabetics, often recurrent
Nails and other sites
- Red, swollen, painful nail folds; nail thickening and discoloration with chronic infection
- Diaper-area rash in infants with satellite spots
When it signals more
- Thrush or candidiasis that keeps returning: check blood sugar and immunity
- Difficulty swallowing with thrush (esophageal spread): needs prompt medical care
- In hospitalized or very immunocompromised patients: fever that does not respond to antibiotics can mean invasive candidiasis - an urgent, hospital-level problem
- Any candidiasis with high fever, breathlessness or confusion: 112 / 102
The classical picture
The classical descriptions track the modern sites one-to-one: kaphaja mukhapaka - white slimy mouth patches with salivation and taste loss (Ashtanga Hridaya, Uttara Tantra 21); kaphaja yoni-vyapat - white slimy discharge with intense itching (Charaka, Chikitsa Sthana 30); and dadru - ringed, itchy patches with raised borders and peripheral papules (Charaka, Chikitsa Sthana 7). Kapha-dampness is the named terrain throughout.
One-line summary
