What is Candidiasis?

Introductory summary

What is candidiasis? The common yeast overgrowth - thrush, vaginal and skin-fold forms - causes, fixes and the recurrence signal.

Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida - a yeast that normally lives on our skin, mouth, gut and genital tract without causing trouble. When the balance tips - antibiotics, diabetes, weak immunity, pregnancy, hot humid folds - the same harmless yeast overgrows and becomes an infection.

The yeast that lives with us

Candida (usually Candida albicans) is part of the normal human flora. Disease happens not when the yeast arrives, but when the checks on it fail: friendly bacteria suppressed by antibiotics, sugar-rich environments, damaged skin barriers, or immune defenses lowered by illness or medicines. This is why candidiasis is often a signal - it points at an underlying shift worth finding.

The forms it takes

  • Oral thrush: white, wipeable patches on the tongue and inner cheeks
  • Vaginal candidiasis: itching, thick white discharge - among the commonest women's complaints
  • Skin-fold (intertrigo): red, moist, itchy patches in the underarms, groin, under the breasts
  • Nail and diaper-area infections
  • Invasive candidiasis: bloodstream or organ infection in hospitalized or very immunocompromised patients - a serious, hospital-managed illness

How it is treated

Antifungal medicines - creams, pessaries, mouth paints, or tablets - clear most candidiasis quickly and completely. The equally important half: fixing what tipped the balance (blood sugar control, reviewing antibiotics, keeping folds dry), or the infection returns.

The classical frame

Classical Ayurveda did not know yeasts, but it described the same clinical pictures: white-coated oral conditions (mukha rogas), white itchy vaginal discharge (kaphaja yoni-vyapat patterns), and itchy spreading skin patches (dadru kushtha) - each with its own treatment logic of clearing dampness and overgrowth. This series uses the modern diagnosis and antifungal treatment as the spine, with the classical descriptions as interpretive depth.

One-line summary

Candida is a normal resident that overgrows when the balance tips; antifungals clear it fast - and recurring candidiasis is the body's way of pointing at something upstream to fix.
