Yoga for Cataract

Introductory summary
Yoga steadies the body around cataract care - but inversions and strain are out near surgery, and no pose dissolves the lens.
Yoga cannot clear a cataract - no asana dissolves a clouded lens. Its honest roles: general health that slows the conditions accelerating cataract (diabetes, stress, poor circulation habits), and safe movement around surgery. Some popular practices are actually risky here.
What yoga genuinely offers
- Diabetes and metabolic control: regular practice helps the sugar control that is real lens protection
- Stress and blood pressure moderation: general vascular health supports every aging tissue, eyes included
- Relaxation and sleep: restorative practice helps the older adult who is anxious about fading vision or upcoming surgery
- Trataka (steady gazing): the classical eye practice is a concentration and eye-comfort exercise - pleasant, traditional, but not a cataract cure; treat claims otherwise as marketing
What to AVOID with a cataract or after surgery
- Head-low and inverted poses (shirshasana, sarvangasana, deep forward bends held long): they spike pressure in the eye - unhelpful with advanced lens disease and specifically discouraged in the weeks after eye surgery
- Straining, breath-holding and forceful kapalabhati soon after surgery: strain raises intraocular pressure; the surgeon's restriction list comes first
- Rubbing or pressing the eyes during practice after surgery: forbidden until cleared
Safe practice around surgery
- Before surgery: gentle standing and seated practice, mild forward bends with the head above the heart, pranayama without force, relaxation - all fine
- First 4-6 weeks after surgery (per surgeon): walking, gentle seated breathing, meditation; nothing inverted, nothing straining
- After clearance: resume the full gentle practice gradually; inversions only with the eye surgeon's explicit yes
The classical note
Shalakya Tantra valued head position and restraint for eye conditions - the old instruction "keep the head level, avoid strain" matches the modern post-op sheet almost word for word. Two systems, one caution.
One-line summary
Gentle yoga supports the body that hosts the lens and calms the mind facing surgery - but inversions and strain are out around eye surgery, and no pose has ever dissolved a cataract.
