Symptoms of Cataract
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Painless slow blur, glare, halos at night, faded colors, frequent new glasses - the classic pattern of a developing cataract.
Cataract symptoms creep in so gradually that people adapt without noticing - until a relative points out how much they are not seeing.
The classic picture
- Gradual, painless blurring: like looking through a fogged window or an old camera lens - the hallmark
- Glare and halos: headlights and tube-lights develop starbursts; night driving becomes stressful
- Faded, yellowed colors: whites look cream; contrast washes out
- Frequent glasses changes: the power keeps shifting (the clouding lens can temporarily improve near vision - the deceptive "second sight" that precedes worsening)
- Double vision in one eye (ghosting)
- Needing brighter light for reading and sewing
- In advanced cataract: the pupil itself looks white or grey instead of black
What cataract does NOT do
No pain, no redness, no itching, no discharge, no sudden loss. Painful red eye or sudden vision loss is NOT cataract - that is a different, urgent problem.
In children
White pupil in photographs, an eye that wanders (squint), not tracking faces or toys, abnormal head postures: any of these needs a pediatric eye check promptly - the visual system develops in the early years and delayed treatment leaves permanent lazy-eye damage.
When to get checked
- Any gradual vision change after 50: an annual eye exam catches cataract (and glaucoma, diabetic eye disease) early
- When vision interferes with daily life - reading, cooking, recognizing faces, walking on uneven ground: that is the surgery conversation, not something to endure
- Sudden loss, pain, flashes or a curtain across vision: same-day emergency care
The classical picture
The classics staged this exactly: timira - misty, dimmed vision while the pupil still looks normal; kacha - deeper clouding with the pupil changing color; linganasha - the fully clouded, whitened pupil. A 2,000-year-old symptom staging that any eye surgeon recognizes today.
One-line summary
Painless fogging, glare at night, faded colors and shifting glasses power = cataract until proven otherwise; pain or sudden loss = something else, urgently.
