How to Treat or Cure Eclampsia
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Eclampsia needs emergency hospital care. Seizure first aid, magnesium sulfate, delivery and recovery.
Eclampsia has no home treatment. It is treated in a hospital, and speed matters.
If a woman has a seizure
- Call 112 or 102 and go to the nearest hospital that can manage delivery and emergencies.
- Protect her. Lay her on her left side on a soft surface and move hard objects away.
- Do not put anything in her mouth, hold her down, or give food, drink or medicine.
- After the seizure keep her on her side and watch her breathing until help arrives.
- Take her antenatal papers and tell the staff her stage of pregnancy.
What the hospital does
- Gives magnesium sulfate to stop and prevent seizures.
- Controls very high blood pressure with safe medicines.
- Protects the airway and gives oxygen.
- Monitors the baby.
- Delivers the baby once the mother is stable. This is the definitive cure for eclampsia.
- Watches closely after delivery, as seizures can still happen for some days.
After treatment
Most women recover. Blood pressure may stay high for days or weeks and needs follow-up. Future pregnancies need early planning and closer care because the condition may return.
If there are only warning signs
Go the same day for a blood pressure and urine check. Pre-eclampsia is treated with monitoring, medicine for blood pressure, and timed delivery.
Where Ayurveda fits. Ayurveda has no cure for eclampsia. After recovery, a qualified practitioner may advise gentle diet and rest, with your doctor's approval, as an adjunct only. Do not delay hospital care to try any home or herbal measure.
