What is Eclampsia?

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Eclampsia is seizures in pregnancy caused by pre-eclampsia. It is an emergency: call 112 or 102.

Eclampsia is a medical emergency of pregnancy. It means a pregnant or recently delivered woman has a seizure (fit) that is caused by pre-eclampsia, not by epilepsy. It can threaten the lives of both mother and baby. If a pregnant woman has a seizure, call 112 or 102 immediately and take her to a hospital with delivery and emergency facilities.

How it starts

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that usually appears after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It brings high blood pressure and signs that organs, such as the kidneys or liver, are under strain. If it is not found and managed, it can progress to eclampsia. Many women with pre-eclampsia never have a seizure, especially when their blood pressure is checked regularly and treated in time.

Why it matters

  • Eclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal death worldwide, especially where antenatal care is hard to reach.
  • A seizure can cause injury, a stroke, breathing problems and loss of the baby.
  • It can also happen after delivery, up to about six weeks later.

The good news

Regular antenatal visits with blood pressure and urine checks catch pre-eclampsia early. Hospitals give magnesium sulfate, a medicine that prevents and treats these seizures, and delivery of the baby is the definitive treatment. With prompt care, most women recover well.

A note on Ayurveda. The classics describe pregnancy care in detail, but eclampsia is a modern clinical diagnosis with a precise medical treatment. This section follows modern medicine and mentions Ayurvedic ideas only as an interpretive and supportive framework. Ayurveda does not treat or cure eclampsia, and no home remedy should delay hospital care.
