Prevention of Eclampsia

Introductory summary
Prevent eclampsia with early antenatal care, blood pressure and urine checks, and knowing warning signs.
Not every case of eclampsia can be prevented, but good antenatal care prevents most seizures and many deaths.
Before and during pregnancy
- Plan. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease or a past pre-eclampsia, see a doctor before pregnancy.
- Register early for antenatal care and attend every visit. Blood pressure and urine checks at each visit are the main way to catch pre-eclampsia.
- Ask about aspirin. Women at high risk may be prescribed low-dose aspirin in the second trimester. Only a doctor should start it.
- Calcium. Ask about calcium supplements if your diet is low in calcium.
- Keep a healthy weight and stay active in the way your doctor advises.
- Do not smoke or drink alcohol.
Know the warning signs
Severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling of face or hands, vomiting and reduced baby movements need same-day care. Family members should know these signs too.
After delivery
- Keep follow-up visits and have blood pressure checked.
- Report headaches, vision changes or swelling in the first six weeks.
For health systems and families
Arrange transport to a hospital that can do deliveries and emergency care. Go early rather than late.
What does not prevent it
Herbs, special diets, rituals, or strict bed rest at home do not prevent eclampsia.
A classical note. Ayurveda's antenatal regimen, which advises gentle routine, nourishing food and calm, is a sensible supportive habit. It works alongside, not instead of, blood pressure checks and hospital care.
