Types of Eclampsia

Introductory summary
Antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum eclampsia, early and late onset, and related conditions.
Doctors do not divide eclampsia into types like some diseases. They describe it by when it happens and by what comes with it. These groups help decide how urgent and how complex care will be.
By timing
- Antepartum eclampsia. Seizures during pregnancy, before labour begins.
- Intrapartum eclampsia. Seizures during labour.
- Postpartum eclampsia. Seizures after delivery, most often in the first 48 hours but possible up to around six weeks.
- Early-onset and late-onset. Early-onset disease starts before 34 weeks and tends to be more severe. Late-onset starts at or after 34 weeks and is more common.
Related conditions on the same spectrum
- Gestational hypertension. High blood pressure after 20 weeks without organ strain.
- Pre-eclampsia. High blood pressure with protein in urine or signs of organ strain.
- Severe pre-eclampsia. Very high blood pressure or serious organ involvement.
- HELLP syndrome. A dangerous form with breakdown of red blood cells, raised liver enzymes and low platelets.
- Eclampsia. Seizures from pre-eclampsia.
Not the same as epilepsy. Seizures in a woman with known epilepsy are managed differently, but any seizure in pregnancy is treated as eclampsia until proven otherwise.
Classical note. Ayurveda describes pregnancy disorders and convulsive illnesses under their own names, but these do not map neatly onto the modern types. Treat any comparison as interpretive.
Knowing the type helps the doctor choose the timing of delivery and the level of monitoring needed.
