Introductory summary
What to eat more and less for fatty liver, Mediterranean-style eating, no alcohol, and supplement cautions.
Diet is a main part of managing fatty liver. No single food cures it, but steady changes can reduce liver fat.
Eat more
- Vegetables and fruit, especially leafy greens and whole fruit
- Whole grains such as millets, oats, brown rice and whole wheat
- Pulses, dal and legumes for protein and fibre
- Nuts, seeds and olive, mustard or groundnut oil in small amounts
- Fish such as sardines or mackerel, or other lean protein
- Curd or buttermilk in moderation
Eat less
- Sugar, sweets and sugary drinks, including fruit juice
- Refined flour (maida) products, white bread and bakery items
- Deep-fried food, packaged snacks and fast food
- Red and processed meat
- Excess salt
- Large portions, especially at night
Alcohol
Avoid it. Even moderate drinking can add to liver damage in fatty liver.
Mediterranean-style eating
Studies suggest a Mediterranean-style pattern, built around vegetables, whole grains, pulses and healthy fats, helps reduce liver fat. A traditional Indian diet built on dal, vegetables and whole grains can follow the same principles.
Meal habits
- Eat regular meals and avoid skipping breakfast
- Watch portion sizes
- Do not use extreme or fad diets
Supplements
No vitamin or herbal supplement is proven to cure fatty liver. Vitamin E is sometimes used by doctors in selected cases only.
Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda advises light, warm, freshly cooked food and less oily, heavy or sweet food for Kapha-Meda imbalance. This fits modern advice but is an interpretive framework, not proof.
Ask your doctor or a dietitian for a plan if you have diabetes or kidney disease.
