Introductory summary
Medicines for related conditions, selected liver drugs, what does not work, and herbal product risks.
For most people with fatty liver, lifestyle change is the main treatment. Medicines are used for related conditions or in selected cases, and only under a doctor's guidance.
Treating related conditions
- Diabetes. Some diabetes medicines, such as pioglitazone and GLP-1 receptor agonists, may also reduce liver fat. Your doctor decides if they suit you.
- High cholesterol. Statins are generally considered safe in fatty liver and help protect the heart, which matters because heart disease is a leading cause of death in this group.
- High blood pressure. Controlled with usual medicines.
Medicines used for the liver itself
- Vitamin E may be used in selected people with biopsy-proven inflammation (MASH) who do not have diabetes. Not for everyone.
- Resmetirom is a newer medicine approved in some countries for MASH with moderate fibrosis. Availability and suitability vary, so ask a hepatologist.
- Weight-loss surgery or medicines may be considered for people with significant obesity.
What does not work
- "Liver tonics," detox pills and most supplements are not proven.
- Ursodeoxycholic acid and silymarin (milk thistle) have not been shown to clearly treat fatty liver.
Safety
- Avoid herbal and "liver-cure" products unless your doctor approves. Some have caused liver injury.
- Be cautious with painkillers, especially paracetamol in large doses, and with alcohol.
- Tell every doctor you see that you have fatty liver.
Monitoring
Regular blood tests, ultrasound or FibroScan help check progress.
Ayurvedic products
No Ayurvedic formula has been proven to cure fatty liver. Use them only as an adjunct, with your doctor informed.
