Yoga and Exercise for Fatty Liver Disease
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Exercise lowers liver fat. Activity targets, gentle yoga as an addition, and safety advice.
Regular movement is one of the most effective treatments for fatty liver, even before weight changes. Yoga can support this, but it works best alongside brisk activity.
What the evidence suggests
Studies show that exercise, aerobic or strength-based, reduces liver fat even without large weight loss. Research on yoga for fatty liver is limited and small, so treat yoga as a helpful addition, not the main exercise.
Exercise targets
- At least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming
- Muscle-strengthening on two days a week
- Break up long sitting with short walks
- Build up gradually
Yoga that may help
- Surya Namaskar at a gentle pace, which raises heart rate and works many muscles
- Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana, which are gentle abdominal poses
- Pawanmuktasana, for digestion comfort
- Pranayama such as slow breathing, for stress
These are used for general fitness and stress relief and have not been proven to treat the liver directly.
Safety
- Check with your doctor first if you have cirrhosis, ascites, heart disease, high blood pressure or joint problems.
- Stop if you feel dizzy, breathless or have chest pain.
- Avoid very intense workouts if you are unwell or weak.
- Learn poses from a qualified instructor.
Stay consistent
Daily walking after meals and regular practice matter more than intensity.
Emergency
Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness needs urgent help: call 112 or 102.
