Introductory summary
Gas problems grouped by source: swallowed air, fermentation and disease-related gas.
Flatulence is not a disease with strict types, but gas problems can be grouped by their source. This helps in finding the cause and the right fix.
By source of gas
- Swallowed-air gas. From eating fast, gum, fizzy drinks or smoking. It often comes out as belching but can also pass down the bowel.
- Fermentation gas. From gut bacteria breaking down fibre and sugars in beans, onions, wheat, some fruits and dairy. This is the most common type of passed gas.
- Disease-related gas. From digestive conditions such as IBS, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease, SIBO or constipation.
By how it behaves
- Odourless or mild gas. Common and usually harmless.
- Foul-smelling gas. Often from sulphur compounds in foods such as eggs, meat, garlic and cruciferous vegetables, or from slow digestion. A sudden strong change with other symptoms deserves a check.
- Gas with pain or bloating. Suggests trapped gas, constipation or a sensitive gut.
- Excessive gas. Passing gas far more than the usual 10 to 20 times a day.
Ayurvedic classification
Ayurveda describes gas-related complaints under terms such as adhmana (distension with gas), anaha (obstruction with distension) and udavarta (upward movement of Vata). These are traditional ideas and do not map exactly to modern types.
In special groups
- Infants: swallowed air during feeding is common.
- Older adults: slower digestion and medicines can add to gas.
- Pregnancy: hormones slow the gut and increase gas.
A doctor can help work out which type applies to you, especially if symptoms are new or persistent.
