Introductory summary
Gas is normal, so the aim is relief. A stepwise guide from habits to medical review.
Flatulence is normal, so the aim is not to stop it but to reduce excessive gas and relieve discomfort. Treatment depends on the cause.
Step 1: Check for warning signs
See a doctor first if you have blood in stool, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, severe pain, fever, or new symptoms after age 50.
Step 2: Fix habits
- Eat slowly and chew well
- Avoid gum, fizzy drinks and straws
- Walk after meals
- Treat constipation
Step 3: Find trigger foods
Keep a food and symptom diary. Reduce beans, onions, cabbage, dairy or sugar-free products if they trigger symptoms, and prepare pulses well.
Step 4: Try simple remedies
Warm water, gentle massage, fennel or ginger tea, and a short walk may bring relief.
Step 5: Consider medicines
Simethicone, lactase or enzyme products may help some people, though evidence is mixed. Ask a pharmacist or doctor.
Step 6: Treat an underlying condition
If tests suggest lactose intolerance, IBS, coeliac disease, SIBO or another cause, specific treatment is needed. A doctor may suggest a short low-FODMAP diet trial.
Step 7: Follow up
Review with your doctor if symptoms last more than a few weeks or change.
What to avoid
- Daily laxatives or herbal purgatives without advice
- Unproven cleanses
- Herbal products for infants
Ayurvedic support
Warm, light meals, carminative spices and a regular routine are traditional supports. Use as an adjunct and keep your doctor informed.
Emergency
Chest pain is not gas. Call 112 or 102 for severe chest pain, or for severe belly pain with vomiting.
