Gastritis is treated by removing the cause, reducing acid and giving the lining time to heal. Most people recover fully.
Step 1: Find the cause
A doctor takes a history and may test for H. pylori with a breath, stool or blood test. Endoscopy is advised for warning signs, age over 55 with new symptoms, or symptoms that do not settle.
Step 2: Treat the cause
- H. pylori: a 14-day course of antibiotics with an acid-lowering medicine, followed by a test of cure
- NSAID gastritis: stop or switch the painkiller if the doctor agrees
- Alcohol or smoking: stopping them is essential for healing
- Autoimmune gastritis: vitamin B12 replacement and follow-up
Step 3: Reduce acid
PPIs or H2 blockers for several weeks. Antacids relieve short-term symptoms.
Step 4: Support healing
Smaller meals, avoiding irritants, stress control and regular sleep.
Follow-up
Review if symptoms return. Repeat testing may be advised after H. pylori treatment.
Is it curable?
Acute and infection-related gastritis usually heals completely. Autoimmune gastritis is lifelong and needs monitoring.
Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda uses diet and herbs for Amlapitta, but the evidence is limited, so it is an adjunct at best and never a substitute for medical treatment.
Urgent care
Black stools, vomiting blood or severe pain: call 112 or 102.
After treatment
Most people feel better within days to a few weeks. Keep taking medicines exactly as prescribed, avoid triggers and return if symptoms come back or you have any warning sign.
