Ayurvedic Treatment for Gastritis

Introductory summary
Ayurveda links gastritis-like symptoms to Amlapitta. An interpretive view with limited evidence and cautions on herbs.
Ayurveda has no separate disease called gastritis, but its symptoms are discussed under Amlapitta, a condition of aggravated Pitta with weak digestive fire (Agni). The ideas below are an interpretive framework, and evidence from modern research is limited.
How Ayurveda describes Amlapitta
Classical texts describe sour belching, burning in the chest and throat, nausea, heaviness and loss of appetite. Causes listed include irregular meals, very spicy, sour or fried food, incompatible combinations and suppressed natural urges.
Common traditional suggestions
- Regular meal times and avoiding late-night eating
- Warm, lightly spiced, easily digested food
- Avoiding fermented, very sour and fried food
- Calming practices such as slow breathing for stress
Herbs often mentioned
Amla, yashtimadhu (liquorice), shatavari and guduchi are sometimes used in traditional practice. Good-quality trials are lacking. Liquorice in large amounts can raise blood pressure and lower potassium.
Cautions
- Herbal products can contain heavy metals or hidden steroids if poorly made
- Do not replace H. pylori treatment or prescribed medicines with herbs
- Tell your doctor about any herbal product you use
- Avoid giving herbal remedies to infants and young children unless a paediatrician advises
Key point
Ayurveda can be a supportive adjunct for lifestyle habits. Black stools, vomiting blood or severe pain need immediate modern medical care.
Practical note
If you wish to try Ayurvedic care, choose a registered practitioner, share your prescriptions with them, and report any new symptom such as black stools straight away.
