Home Remedies for Gastritis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Home care for gastritis includes smaller meals, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and bland food. It does not treat H. pylori.

Home care can ease mild gastritis symptoms and support healing, but it does not treat H. pylori or replace medical advice. Seek care if symptoms last over two weeks or any warning sign appears.

What may help

  • Smaller, more frequent meals instead of large heavy ones
  • Eat slowly and stop before feeling very full
  • Stop irritants: alcohol, smoking and tobacco chewing
  • Avoid lying down within 2 to 3 hours after meals
  • Plain, bland foods during a flare, such as rice, banana, toast and curd
  • Water through the day, and a warm drink if it soothes you
  • Stress control: walking, slow breathing, regular sleep

Common remedies and cautions

  • Cold milk gives brief relief to some but can increase acid later
  • Baking soda drinks can cause gas and sodium overload, so avoid regular use
  • Raw garlic, strong ginger or peppermint can irritate some people
  • Avoid giving home remedies to infants and young children without a paediatrician's advice

What to avoid

Taking painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac for pain on an empty stomach can make gastritis worse. Ask a doctor for a safer option.

When home care is not enough

Black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, severe pain, repeated vomiting or weight loss need urgent care. Call 112 or 102 in an emergency.

Keep a simple record

Write down what you ate, when pain began and what helped. Bring the notes to your doctor, as they speed up finding triggers.

Rest well and sleep with the head slightly raised if night symptoms bother you.
