How to Treat or Cure GERD
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
GERD is managed with lifestyle change, acid-lowering medicines and sometimes surgery. Most people control symptoms.
GERD treatment combines lifestyle change, medicines when needed, and sometimes a procedure. Many people control symptoms well.
Step 1: Lifestyle
Weight loss, smaller meals, early dinner, a raised head of the bed, no smoking and limiting alcohol and personal triggers.
Step 2: Medicines
- Antacids or alginates for occasional symptoms
- H2 blockers for mild symptoms
- PPIs for frequent symptoms or oesophagitis, usually for 4 to 8 weeks and then reviewed
Step 3: Review
If symptoms return when treatment stops, a doctor may advise the lowest dose that works, taken as needed or continuously. Endoscopy is done for warning signs or poor response.
Step 4: Procedures and surgery
For people with severe symptoms despite medicines, large hiatal hernia, or who do not want lifelong tablets, options include laparoscopic fundoplication and other anti-reflux procedures. A specialist decides after tests.
Is GERD curable?
Lifestyle change and weight loss can resolve symptoms in some people. For many, GERD is a long-term condition that is controlled rather than permanently cured.
Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda uses diet and herbs for Amlapitta, but evidence is limited, so it is an adjunct at best.
Urgent care
Chest pain with sweating or breathlessness, vomiting blood or black stools: call 112 or 102.
Before you see a doctor
Bring a list of all your medicines and supplements to the appointment, along with a note of when symptoms occur, what you ate, and whether they wake you at night. This helps your doctor choose the right tests and treatment without delay.
