Diet and Food Guidance for Glaucoma
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
No diet cures glaucoma. Eye-healthy foods, steady fluids and blood sugar control support treatment but do not replace it.
No diet can cure glaucoma or lower eye pressure enough to replace treatment. Healthy eating supports overall health, blood sugar and blood pressure, which matter for eye health.
Foods that support general eye health
- Green leafy vegetables, which contain nitrates and lutein
- Colourful fruit and vegetables such as carrots, papaya, oranges and berries
- Nuts, seeds and fish rich in omega-3 fats
- Whole grains and pulses for steady blood sugar
Habits to consider
- Drink fluids steadily: gulping a litre or more of water quickly may raise eye pressure briefly. Sip through the day.
- Caffeine: large amounts may raise pressure slightly for a short time. Moderate tea and coffee are usually fine.
- Alcohol and smoking: limit alcohol and avoid tobacco, which harm blood vessels
- Salt: keep it moderate, especially if you have high blood pressure
Weight and diabetes
Healthy weight and good blood sugar control lower the risk of damage from diabetic eye disease.
Supplements
Evidence that vitamins or herbs treat glaucoma is weak. Tell your doctor before taking supplements.
Key point
Diet is supportive only. Keep using prescribed drops and attending check-ups. Sudden eye pain, halos or vomiting is an emergency. Call 112 or 102.
Before your eye appointment
Carry your old reports, glasses and a list of all drops, tablets and supplements you use. Note any family history of glaucoma, diabetes or steroid use, and write down when symptoms occur. This helps your eye doctor choose the right tests and plan, and spot changes early.
