Ayurvedic Treatment for Gout

Introductory summary
Ayurveda links gout-like symptoms to Vatarakta. An interpretive view with limited evidence and cautions on herbs.
Ayurveda describes a condition called Vatarakta, in which joint pain, burning and swelling are linked to aggravated Vata with vitiated blood. It is often compared with gout, though the match is loose. The ideas below form an interpretive framework, and evidence from modern research is limited.
Traditional suggestions
- Light, easily digested food and regular meals
- Avoiding sour, salty, fermented and heavily fried food, and alcohol
- Staying well hydrated, and avoiding day sleep and long fasting
- Rest of the inflamed joint during a flare
Herbs and formulations sometimes mentioned
Guduchi, giloy, guggulu preparations and others are used in tradition. Good trials in gout are lacking. Some preparations contain heavy metals, and some herbs can affect kidneys or interact with gout medicines.
Cautions
- Do not stop prescribed uric acid medicines, colchicine or other treatment for herbs
- Avoid poorly made products with unknown metals or steroids, as these can harm the kidneys
- Tell your doctor about any herbal product you take
- Do not apply hot oils to a hot, swollen joint with fever, as infection must be ruled out
- Avoid herbal remedies for children unless a paediatrician advises
Key point
Ayurveda can support diet and lifestyle habits as an adjunct, but gout needs proper medical care to protect joints and kidneys. A hot, swollen joint with fever needs same-day care.
Before your appointment
Carry earlier uric acid and kidney reports, a list of all medicines and supplements, and notes on which joints hurt, when flares started and what you ate or drank beforehand. Tell your doctor about any kidney stones, diabetes, blood pressure or family history of gout.
