Ayurvedic Treatment for Headache

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Shirashoola, lifestyle, massage and herbs, with limited evidence and safety points.

In Ayurveda, headache is called shirashoola. Texts describe types linked to vata, pitta, kapha and their combination, and ardhavabhedaka for one-sided headache similar to migraine. This is a traditional framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatment of headache is limited and mostly from small studies.

What practitioners commonly suggest

  • Lifestyle: regular sleep, regular meals, avoiding fasting, reducing screen strain and managing stress.
  • Head and neck massage (shiro abhyanga): gentle oil massage may relax tight muscles. It is a comfort measure.
  • Nasya (nasal oil drops): used in Ayurvedic practice. It should be done only under a qualified practitioner, never in children, never during an acute illness, and never for sudden severe headache.
  • Herbs and formulations: such as brahmi, ashwagandha and others are sometimes used. Quality evidence for headache is lacking.
  • Yoga and breathing: see the related guidance on gentle practice.

Safety points

  • Rule out serious causes first. A new, sudden or severe headache needs a doctor, not home treatment. Call 112 or 102 for red flag symptoms.
  • Buy products from reputable makers. Some Ayurvedic products have contained heavy metals.
  • Tell your doctors about every herb and medicine you take.
  • Do not stop prescribed migraine or blood pressure medicine to use herbs.

Key point

Ayurvedic care can be an adjunct to a medical diagnosis and plan, not a substitute for them.

Before your appointment

Keep a headache diary for a few weeks, noting when headaches start, how long they last, their location and type of pain, and possible triggers such as sleep, meals, stress, periods and screen time. List all medicines, supplements and painkillers you take and how many days a month you use them. Mention head injuries, family history, and any red flag symptoms.
