Ayurvedic Treatment for Heart Attack
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of hridroga as an adjunct after medical care, with limited evidence.
A heart attack needs emergency medical care. Call 112 or 102. Ayurvedic treatment cannot replace this and must never delay it.
Ayurveda discusses heart disease under hridroga and links it to imbalance of the doshas, poor digestion and stress. This is a traditional framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic medicines in preventing or treating heart attack is limited.
Where Ayurveda may play a role
Only after the acute attack has been treated, and only with your cardiologist's knowledge and agreement:
- Lifestyle and routine: regular sleep, meals and activity, which match modern heart advice.
- Diet advice: fresh, lightly cooked food with less salt, oil and sugar.
- Stress care: relaxation, breathing and meditation as a supplement to cardiac rehab.
- Herbs: arjuna bark is traditionally used for the heart. Small studies exist, but the evidence is weak and it is not proven to prevent or treat heart attack.
Safety points
- Never stop or reduce aspirin, statins, clot-preventing drugs or blood pressure medicines to take herbs.
- Some herbs, including arjuna, garlic, ginger and guggul, can interact with blood thinners and other heart medicines or affect bleeding or blood pressure.
- Avoid products with claims to "clear blockages" or avoid angioplasty.
- Some Ayurvedic products contain heavy metals. Buy only from reputable makers.
- Tell your cardiologist about everything you take.
Key point
Use Ayurveda as a gentle adjunct after medical treatment, not as a substitute for it.
Before your appointment
Bring all your reports, ECGs and medicine strips, and a list of every medicine and supplement you take, including herbal products. Note when symptoms occurred, what brought them on and how long they lasted. Share your family history of heart disease, and your smoking, alcohol, diabetes and blood pressure history. Ask about cardiac rehabilitation and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
