Home Remedies for Infertility

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Infertility home care: timing intercourse, healthy weight, no smoking, folic acid and stress care.

Home measures cannot treat blocked tubes, severe sperm problems or similar causes, but healthy habits can support fertility in both partners.

Time intercourse well

  • Have sex every 2 to 3 days through the cycle, and especially in the fertile window, in the days before and after ovulation.
  • Ovulation kits or cycle tracking can help, but do not become a source of stress.
  • No special position or "lying down afterwards" has been shown to help.

Healthy habits

  • Keep a healthy weight. Both being overweight and underweight can affect fertility.
  • Stop smoking, and limit alcohol. Avoid recreational drugs.
  • Take folic acid daily, ideally starting before pregnancy, as your doctor advises.
  • Sleep well and manage stress with exercise, breathing or counselling.
  • Keep moderate physical activity. Very intense exercise can disturb periods.

For men

  • Avoid prolonged heat on the testicles, such as hot tubs or laptops on the lap, and very tight underwear.
  • Avoid anabolic steroids and testosterone supplements.

What to avoid

  • Lubricants that harm sperm, unless fertility-friendly
  • Unproven products and remedies promising guaranteed pregnancy
  • Delaying a medical visit when you are 35 or older

Emotional care

Talk openly with your partner. Avoid blame. Consider counselling.

Key point

Healthy habits help, but if pregnancy has not occurred in 6 to 12 months, see a doctor together.

Before your appointment

Come as a couple if you can. Note how long you have been trying, cycle length and regularity, past pregnancies, surgeries, infections and medicines. Bring past reports and, if available, a semen analysis. List supplements and herbs you take, along with smoking, alcohol and exercise habits. Ask about tests, treatment options, costs, success rates and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
