Ayurvedic Treatment for Infertility

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of infertility (vandhyatva): supportive lifestyle care only, no guarantees, with herb cautions.

In Ayurveda, difficulty in conceiving is discussed as vandhyatva. Classical texts describe four factors needed for conception: ritu (the right time), kshetra (the reproductive organs), ambu (nutrition) and beeja (egg and sperm). This is an interpretive framework and not a proven explanation.

How Ayurveda looks at it

  • Healthy digestion, regular routine and good sleep
  • Balanced diet and healthy body weight
  • Stress reduction and emotional wellbeing
  • Avoiding smoking, alcohol and excess heat exposure
  • Cleansing and rejuvenating therapies (such as panchakarma and rasayana), advised by a qualified practitioner

What practitioners may discuss

Herbs such as shatavari, ashwagandha and others are traditionally used for reproductive health. Their evidence is limited, and studies are small.

What the evidence says

Good trials showing that Ayurvedic treatments improve the chance of pregnancy are lacking. They should not be presented as a cure or a guarantee of conception.

Important cautions

  • Ayurveda is an adjunct. It should not delay a medical evaluation, especially for women over 35.
  • Tell your fertility doctor about every herb and supplement. Some interact with fertility medicines, or affect hormones, thyroid or liver function.
  • Stop herbal products and check with your doctor as soon as you may be pregnant.
  • Avoid metal or mineral (rasa) preparations without qualified supervision.
  • Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed conception.

Key point

Ayurvedic lifestyle advice may support wellbeing, but it should be used alongside, not instead of, proper fertility evaluation.

Before your appointment

Come as a couple if you can. Note how long you have been trying, cycle length and regularity, past pregnancies, surgeries, infections and medicines. Bring past reports and, if available, a semen analysis. List supplements and herbs you take, along with smoking, alcohol and exercise habits. Ask about tests, treatment options, costs, success rates and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
