Introductory summary
Step-by-step treatment of neuropathy: find the cause, treat it and ease symptoms.
Treating neuropathy means finding and treating the cause, relieving symptoms and preventing injury.
Step 1: find the cause
A doctor examines you and may order blood tests for sugar, HbA1c, B12, thyroid, kidney and liver function. Nerve conduction studies, electromyography and sometimes nerve biopsy or a spinal fluid test are used for some types.
Step 2: treat the cause
- Control diabetes
- Replace B12 or other missing nutrients
- Stop alcohol and any harmful medicines
- Treat infections and autoimmune disease
- Release pinched nerves with splints, injections or surgery
Step 3: manage pain
Medicines such as pregabalin, gabapentin, duloxetine or low-dose amitriptyline, and topical patches or creams, as prescribed.
Step 4: protect and rehabilitate
- Daily foot checks and proper footwear
- Physiotherapy for strength and balance
- Occupational therapy for hand function
- Fall prevention
Step 5: regular follow-up
Check blood sugar, B12 and nerve function as advised.
Where Ayurveda fits
Some therapies may offer comfort, but they should not replace medical care.
Emergency (112 or 102): rapidly rising weakness, trouble breathing or swallowing, or loss of bladder control.
Remember
Nerves heal slowly. Early treatment of the cause gives the best outcome.
When to get help
See a doctor if you have numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness that lasts more than a few days, especially with diabetes. Avoid long self-medication and unknown herbal products, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
