Ayurvedic treatment for neuropathy

Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of neuropathy (Vatavyadhi), traditional therapies and safety notes.
Ayurveda describes nerve disorders under Vatavyadhi, and conditions causing numbness and tingling under Supti and Kampa. Neuropathy has medical causes that need diagnosis and treatment. Ayurvedic ideas are an interpretive framework, and research on Ayurvedic treatment of neuropathy is limited and mixed.
Traditional approaches
- Abhyanga: warm oil massage by a trained therapist
- Swedana: fomentation in a clinic. Numb skin cannot sense heat, so never use hot steam, hot oil or hot packs on numb feet.
- Basti: medicated enema given in a clinic only
- Herbs often mentioned: Ashwagandha, Guggulu, Bala, Dashamoola and Rasna preparations
Safety
- Burns on numb skin go unnoticed, so test warmth with an elbow
- Some herbal and mineral products contain heavy metals that can themselves cause neuropathy
- Do not stop diabetes medicines or other prescribed treatment
- Tell your doctor about all herbs, which may interact with medicines
- Avoid herbs in pregnancy unless a doctor advises
- No oils, herbs or honey for infants
Supportive lifestyle
- Warm, light, freshly cooked food
- Regular sleep and daily routine
- Gentle walking and stretching
- Stress reduction
Remember
Ayurveda can be an adjunct for comfort. Diagnosis and treatment of the cause belong with a doctor.
When to get help
See a doctor if you have numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness that lasts more than a few days, especially with diabetes. Avoid long self-medication and unknown herbal products, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
