Introductory summary
Safe home care for neuropathy, with daily foot care and injury prevention.
Home care for neuropathy focuses on comfort and on preventing injuries to numb areas. It does not replace treatment of the cause.
Foot care (most important)
- Check both feet every day, including between toes and soles, for cuts, blisters, redness and sores. Use a mirror or ask someone to help.
- Wash feet daily in lukewarm water, tested with your elbow, and dry well
- Moisturise the skin but not between the toes
- Wear well-fitting shoes and clean socks, never walk barefoot
- Check shoes for stones before wearing them
- Trim nails straight across and see a podiatrist for corns
Comfort
- Warm baths if you can sense temperature normally
- Gentle massage with a mild moisturiser
- A cool room and light bedcover for burning pain at night
- Rest, and avoid long pressure on elbows and wrists
Safety at home
- Good lighting, handrails and non-slip mats to avoid falls
- Be careful with hot cups, stoves and heaters if hands are numb
Daily habits
- Keep blood sugar in range if you have diabetes
- Avoid alcohol and smoking
- Walk daily
Do not
- Use hot packs, hot oil or heating pads on numb skin
- Cut corns or calluses yourself
- Apply strong chemicals or unknown creams
Remember
See a doctor early for any foot wound. Emergencies call 112 or 102.
When to get help
See a doctor if you have numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness that lasts more than a few days, especially with diabetes. Avoid long self-medication and unknown herbal products, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
