Introductory summary

How to prevent neuropathy: control blood sugar, check B12, avoid alcohol and protect your nerves.

Many forms of neuropathy can be prevented or slowed by controlling their causes.

Control diabetes

Keep blood sugar in the target range with a healthy diet, regular activity and medicines. Check HbA1c as your doctor advises, and examine your feet every day.

Eat and supplement wisely

  • Include B12 foods such as dairy, eggs and fish
  • Ask for a B12 test if you are vegetarian, over 50 or take metformin
  • Avoid large doses of vitamin B6 supplements

Avoid toxins

  • Limit alcohol and do not smoke
  • Avoid unknown herbal or metal-containing products
  • Follow safety rules when working with solvents, pesticides and heavy metals

Protect your nerves

  • Take breaks from repetitive hand work and keep wrists neutral
  • Avoid long pressure on elbows, wrists and knees
  • Wear protective gear in sports and while riding

Vaccines and infection care

Shingles vaccine can lower the risk of shingles and the nerve pain after it. Treat infections early.

Stay active and keep a healthy weight

Regular exercise improves circulation to the nerves.

Get checked

Report tingling or numbness early. People with diabetes should have a foot and nerve check yearly.

Remember

Blood sugar control, B12 and avoiding alcohol are the most effective steps.

When to get help

See a doctor if you have numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness that lasts more than a few days, especially with diabetes. Avoid long self-medication and unknown herbal products, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
