Ayurvedic treatment for piles

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of piles (Arsha) and cautions.

Ayurveda describes piles as Arsha, linked with weak digestion (Mandagni), constipation and aggravated Vata, Pitta or Kapha. Traditional texts divide it into dry and bleeding types. This is a traditional framework. It is not proven to cure piles.

Modern care comes first

Rectal bleeding can have other causes, including polyps and cancer. See a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. Ayurvedic measures can be a supportive addition under guidance but should not delay a proper check.

Traditional approaches sometimes used

  • Diet for easy digestion and soft stools: buttermilk, warm water, fibre-rich food and light meals
  • Triphala: a traditional bowel regulator used at bedtime. It can cause loose stools, so use the dose advised.
  • Sitz bath with warm water or herbal decoctions for comfort
  • Herbal ointments and pastes applied locally, traditionally with ingredients such as turmeric and neem
  • Para-surgical procedures: Kshara sutra (medicated thread ligation), Kshara and Agnikarma are used by trained Ayurvedic surgeons for some piles. Small studies exist, but results depend on the practitioner and condition. Choose a qualified, registered doctor.

Cautions

  • Avoid strong purgatives, which can irritate the bowel and worsen bleeding.
  • Avoid unregulated powders, mineral preparations and "guaranteed cure" claims.
  • Do not apply unknown pastes or caustic substances on the anal skin.
  • Seek advice in pregnancy and for children.
  • Do not delay care for heavy bleeding, severe pain or a lump that will not go back.

When to get help

See a doctor for bleeding, a change in bowel habits, or if symptoms do not improve in 1 to 2 weeks.

Remember

Ayurveda is an interpretive, adjunct approach with limited evidence. A proper diagnosis comes first.
