Introductory summary
Types of rheumatoid arthritis: seropositive, seronegative and juvenile.
Rheumatoid arthritis is described in a few ways depending on blood tests and how the disease behaves. Knowing the type helps doctors decide how closely to monitor and how strong the treatment should be.
Seropositive rheumatoid arthritis Blood tests show rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-CCP antibodies, or both. This is the most common type, and it often has a more active course with a higher chance of joint damage.
Seronegative rheumatoid arthritis RF and anti-CCP are not found, but the person has the usual joint pattern and inflammation. It tends to be milder in some people, though outcomes vary.
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis RA-like arthritis that begins in children under 16. It has several subtypes and needs care from a paediatric rheumatologist.
Palindromic rheumatism Short, repeated attacks of joint pain and swelling that come and go. Some people later develop typical RA.
Early (undifferentiated) arthritis Joint swelling with features of RA that does not yet meet full criteria. It needs close follow-up.
Related conditions that can look similar Psoriatic arthritis, lupus, gout and osteoarthritis can cause joint pain, but they are treated differently. A doctor distinguishes them using examination, blood tests and imaging.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Traditional texts mention amavata and related conditions in terms of dosha patterns. These are interpretive categories and do not match the medical types above.
Remember The type is decided by a doctor using symptoms, blood tests and imaging, so avoid labelling joint pain yourself.
