Medicines and products for stomach cancer

Introductory summary

Chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy for stomach cancer.

Medicines for stomach cancer are given by oncologists and chosen by stage, tumor markers and the person's fitness. This page explains the main categories. Never start, stop or substitute cancer medicines on your own.

Chemotherapy Drug combinations that kill fast-dividing cells. Used before surgery (to shrink the tumor), after surgery (to lower recurrence risk) and for advanced disease (to control the cancer). Side effects such as nausea, low blood counts and hair loss are managed with supportive medicines.

Targeted therapy

  • Trastuzumab for HER2-positive tumors.
  • Ramucirumab and others for advanced disease.
  • Imatinib for GIST, a different stomach tumor type. These work only when the tumor has the matching marker, found by biopsy testing.

Immunotherapy Medicines such as nivolumab or pembrolizumab help the immune system attack the cancer in selected patients, based on tumor markers.

Supportive medicines

  • Antiemetics for nausea
  • Pain relief, from simple analgesics to stronger medicines when needed
  • Medicines for anemia, nutrition and bone health
  • Vitamin B12 injections after stomach removal

For H. pylori Eradication therapy (antibiotics with acid suppression) is given when the bacteria is present; in rare early gastric lymphoma linked to H. pylori, this can be the main treatment.

Products to avoid Any product marketed as a cancer cure: herbal mixtures, "miracle" supplements or unverified injections. They can be harmful and can interfere with treatment.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Traditional remedies may support comfort but are not cancer medicines and must not replace oncology care.

When to see a doctor All cancer medicines need specialist supervision. Call 112 for severe bleeding, uncontrolled vomiting or collapse.

Remember Cancer medicines are chosen by stage and tumor markers; only your oncology team should direct them.
