Yoga and exercise for sunburn

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

During a burn, trade intensity for stillness: cool rooms, gentle stretching, breathing and rest. No sweat, no sun, no hot yoga until skin heals.

Yoga and exercise do not treat sunburn, but how you move while healing affects comfort and recovery. A few adjustments keep you active without aggravating burned skin.

While the burn is fresh (first few days)

  • Rest from vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours with a significant burn - exercise raises skin temperature and blood flow to the surface, which intensifies pain and swelling
  • Avoid sweating on burned skin: sweat stings and salt irritates
  • No outdoor yoga or walks in the sun until skin is fully healed; a burned area re-burns in minutes
  • Skip hot yoga entirely until healed - heat is the enemy of a burn
  • Avoid tight or friction-heavy practice: straps, mats rubbing on burned shoulders, and compressive clothing hurt

Gentle options that are fine

  • Slow stretching and gentle mobility indoors, in a cool room, avoiding poses that stretch burned skin tight
  • Breathing practices: deep relaxed breathing and anulom-vilom are cooling, calming, and safe
  • Shavasana and yoga nidra: genuinely useful - rest is a real part of burn recovery, and stress reduction supports healing
  • Sheetali and sheetkari pranayama (the traditional "cooling breaths"): pleasant and cooling by feel, safe to practice, and a fitting traditional choice here

Returning to normal practice

  • Resume gradually once peeling stops and skin is no longer tender
  • For outdoor practice, return with full sun protection: early morning timing, shade, clothing, and sunscreen on healed skin

A note on tradition

Classical practice always respected the sun's strength - morning and evening were practice times, not noon. That instinct is exactly right.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): The cooling breaths and rest-oriented practice above are the classical pitta-pacifying answer to heat damage, used here within an interpretive framework alongside modern burn care.

Remember: During a burn, trade intensity for stillness: cool rooms, gentle stretching, breathing, and rest. No sweat, no sun, no hot yoga until the skin is fully calm again.
