Introductory summary
First-degree redness heals in days; blistering second-degree burns need more care. Plus the sun reactions that look like sunburn but are not.
Sunburn is classified by how deep the UV damage goes, which predicts how it heals and how much care it needs. Sun exposure also causes other skin reactions worth distinguishing.
First-degree (superficial) sunburn
- The common kind: red, warm, painful skin without blisters
- Damage is limited to the outer skin layer
- Heals in 3 to 7 days, often with peeling
- Managed entirely at home with cooling, moisturizer, and fluids
Second-degree sunburn
- Blisters form - damage has reached deeper skin layers
- More painful, and the skin under blisters is raw and open to infection
- Takes one to two weeks or more to heal
- Small scattered blisters can be managed at home (never popped); widespread blistering needs a doctor
By UV dose and skin type
Doctors also rate sun sensitivity by skin phototype: fair skin burns in 15 to 20 minutes of harsh Indian summer sun, while deeper skin tones may take an hour or more - but every skin type burns with enough exposure.
Related sun reactions that are not classic sunburn
- Sun allergy (polymorphic light eruption): itchy red bumps or patches hours to days after sun, even with modest exposure; recurrent and needs a doctor's diagnosis
- Phototoxic reactions: burn-like patches after sun plus certain medicines or plant juices (like lime juice on skin in sun - "margarita burn")
- Heat rash (prickly heat): tiny itchy bumps from blocked sweat glands in heat, not UV damage
Long-term damage type
Chronic repeated exposure causes tanning, freckling, patchy pigmentation, wrinkles, and over years raises skin cancer risk - even without a single memorable burn.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Classical texts do not grade burns this way. The modern grading is what predicts healing time and guides care, so it should lead.
Remember: Red without blisters heals at home in days; blisters mean deeper damage and more care; blisters everywhere, or a reaction that looks unusual for sun, belong to a doctor.
