Stages of sunburn

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Sunburn peaks at 12 to 24 hours, not at the beach. The phases from hidden damage through redness, peeling, and the long-term after-effects.

Sunburn unfolds on a fairly predictable timeline. It does not have formal medical stages, but knowing the phases tells you what is coming and when to act.

Phase 1: Exposure and hidden damage (during sun time)

  • UV damages skin cell DNA within minutes, but you feel nothing yet
  • Skin may look only slightly pink at first
  • The trap: people stay out longer because "it is not red yet" - the burn is already loading

Phase 2: Redness and pain rise (2 to 6 hours after)

  • Redness, warmth, and tenderness develop and intensify
  • Skin feels tight and hot

Phase 3: Peak (12 to 24 hours)

  • Pain, redness, and swelling peak
  • Blisters may appear in deeper burns
  • Headache, mild fever, chills, and fatigue can accompany a large burn
  • Care matters most now: cooling, moisturizer, fluids, pain relief, and absolutely no more sun

Phase 4: Healing (days 2 to 7)

  • Pain fades, itching begins
  • Peeling starts as damaged skin sheds - do not pull at peeling skin
  • Blisters dry and heal beneath

Phase 5: After-effects (weeks to years)

  • The burned area may tan darker or peel to lighter, sensitive new skin
  • New skin burns easily - protect it carefully for weeks
  • The DNA damage is permanent and cumulative; it is part of lifetime skin cancer risk

Off-track courses

  • Worsening pain, pus, or spreading redness around blisters: infection, see a doctor
  • Fever, confusion, faintness: think heat illness, not just skin - urgent care

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Classical care would describe cooling and soothing the aggravated pitta through each phase - consistent with the cooling-first approach, though the framework is interpretive.

Remember: Sunburn is worst at 12 to 24 hours, not at the beach. Peak care is cooling, moisture, and fluids; peeling and new pink skin follow; and every phase after is about protecting the healing skin from more sun.
