Prevention of sunburn

Introductory summary
Shade at midday, SPF 30+ reapplied, full sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat, and babies under 6 months fully out of direct sun.
Sunburn is one of the most preventable injuries there is. Protection is a few habits, and they matter in every Indian season - not just at the beach.
Timing and shade
- Limit direct sun between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV is fiercest
- Use shade, trees, umbrellas, and canopies; remember clouds do not block UV
- Extra care near water, sand, and at altitude - reflected UV burns faster
Sunscreen, used properly
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant if sweating or swimming
- Apply 20 minutes before going out, generously - most people use a quarter of the needed amount
- Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming, sweating, or toweling
- Cover the missed spots: ears, back of the neck, tops of feet, and lips (SPF lip balm)
Clothing - the most reliable sunscreen
- Full-sleeved, tightly woven, loose clothing in cotton; dark or bright colors block more UV than pale ones
- Wide-brimmed hat - caps leave ears and neck exposed
- UV-blocking sunglasses to protect the eyes themselves
Special protection for children
- Babies under 6 months: keep out of direct sunlight entirely - shade and clothing, and sunscreen only on tiny exposed areas if shade truly is impossible, per pediatric guidance
- Children need the same SPF 30+, reapplied, plus hats and play scheduled outside peak hours
- One blistering childhood sunburn significantly raises lifetime skin cancer risk - protection now is protection for decades
Know your extra risks
- Check if your medicines increase sun sensitivity (some antibiotics, acne and diabetes medicines do)
- Fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, and outdoor work all call for stricter habits
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Classical advice to avoid harsh midday sun and protect the head and skin fits modern guidance naturally. The framework is interpretive; the specific steps above are the proven ones.
Remember: Shade at midday, SPF 30+ applied generously and reapplied, full sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat, and babies under 6 months fully out of direct sun - that combination prevents essentially all sunburn.
