Home remedies for swine flu

Introductory summary
Rest, fluids, paracetamol and isolation are the home remedy for mild swine flu - plus protecting the household, and the mistakes to never make.
Most swine flu cases recover at home, and good home care is genuinely the treatment for mild illness. The aims are comfort, fluids, rest - and not spreading the virus to the rest of the house.
Caring for the sick person
- Rest: sleep and minimal exertion; the body fights flu best lying down
- Fluids constantly: water, warm soups, coconut water, nimbu pani, tulsi-ginger tea - fever dehydrates fast
- Paracetamol for fever and body ache, as directed on the pack. Never give aspirin to children or teenagers with flu - it is linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but dangerous complication
- Warm salt-water gargles for sore throat (adults and older children who can gargle safely)
- Steam inhalation for blocked nose in adults, plain warm water only - never for children
- Light, easy food: khichdi, dal-rice, soups - no force-feeding, appetite returns on its own
Protecting everyone else - this is half of home care
- Isolate: the sick person stays in one room, away from pregnant women, grandparents, and small children
- Masks: the sick person wears one when near others; caregivers wear one too
- Hand washing for everyone, frequently, with soap
- Separate towels, utensils, and bedding for the patient; wash them in hot water
- Ventilate the room - open windows dilute virus in the air
- Stay home for 5 to 7 days from symptoms: no school, office, or travel while contagious
What home care must never do
- No antibiotics on your own - flu is viral; antibiotics do nothing and cause harm
- No aspirin for children
- No "sweating it out" under heavy blankets with high fever
- Do not send a feverish child to school to "see how it goes"
When home care ends and the hospital begins
Breathing difficulty, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, returning fever, or a high-risk patient getting worse - home care stops here. Call a doctor immediately, and 112 for severe breathing trouble.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Classical home regimens for fever - rest, light warm food, herbal teas - match the comfort care above. The framework is interpretive; isolation and masks are the modern additions that protect the household.
Remember: Rest, fluids, paracetamol, and isolation are the home remedy - and they work for mild cases. No aspirin for children, no antibiotics without a doctor, and danger signs end the home experiment immediately.
