Medicines and products for swine flu
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Oseltamivir works within 48 hours by prescription; paracetamol handles fever; no aspirin for children, no antibiotics for a virus, and the annual flu shot.
Swine flu has a real antiviral treatment, which puts it ahead of most viral illnesses - but the medicine works on the doctor's clock and prescription, not on self-medication.
The antiviral: oseltamivir (Tamiflu and generics)
- Prescription-only, and it works best within 48 hours of symptoms starting - which is why high-risk patients should see a doctor early, not wait
- Usually given for 5 days; it shortens illness and lowers the chance of complications in high-risk and severe cases
- Not needed for every mild case in healthy people - doctors decide by category, not by panic
- Do not demand it, stockpile it, or take leftover courses
Symptom medicines (home-appropriate)
- Paracetamol for fever and body ache, as directed - the mainstay
- Ibuprofen is an alternative for adults who can take it
- Never aspirin for children or teenagers with flu (Reye's syndrome risk)
- Cough: honey in warm water (over 1 year old), warm fluids; most cough syrups add little
- Decongestants help some adults briefly; avoid in small children
What does NOT work
- Antibiotics do nothing against the virus. They are added only if a bacterial complication develops (like secondary pneumonia), and only by prescription
- Antivirals started too late in mild cases add little - timing and patient category decide value
- No vitamin, zinc, or "immunity booster" product is proven to treat H1N1
The vaccine - prevention as the best medicine
- Annual flu vaccination covers H1N1 and is recommended especially for pregnant women, young children, older adults, healthcare workers, and people with chronic illness
- It does not guarantee zero flu, but it sharply reduces severe disease
Danger signs override everything
Breathing difficulty, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, or persistent high fever: the needed medicine is hospital care. Call 112 for severe breathing trouble or confusion.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): Traditional fever remedies function as comfort care; the antiviral and the vaccine are the proven interventions. The framework is interpretive and must never substitute for either.
Remember: Oseltamivir works when started within 48 hours by prescription; paracetamol handles fever safely; aspirin is banned for children with flu; antibiotics are useless against the virus; and the annual flu shot is the smartest medicine of all for high-risk families.
