Home remedies for tonsillitis

Introductory summary

Salt-water gargles, honey (over age 1), warm fluids, rest, soft food and paracetamol ease tonsillitis at home; strep still needs a doctor's antibiotics.

Home remedies for tonsillitis

Most tonsillitis is viral and heals in a week - home care is the whole treatment. What helps:

  • Warm salt-water gargles: half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargled and spat out 3-4 times daily - genuinely soothing. For children old enough to gargle without swallowing.
  • Honey: a spoon straight or in warm water calms the throat. Never for infants under 12 months.
  • Warm (not hot) fluids: soups, dal water, turmeric milk, tulsi-ginger tea - plus plenty of plain water. Hydration is the priority, especially for children eating poorly.
  • Cold comfort: curd, yogurt, ice cream or smoothies numb the pain and are often accepted by children refusing everything else - cold does not worsen the infection.
  • Rest and voice rest: sleep supports recovery; avoid shouting.
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen: correct doses for pain and fever. Never aspirin in children/teens.
  • Avoid smoke: tobacco smoke worsens and prolongs throat inflammation.

Home care limits: if there is high fever with pus patches and no cough (strep pattern), one-sided worsening pain, drooling, breathing difficulty, a child not drinking at all, or illness beyond a week - home remedies are no longer the answer. Strep needs antibiotics from a doctor, completed in full.

Recurrent attacks (several per year) are not a home-remedy problem - they need ENT assessment.

Remember: gargle, honey (over 1), warm fluids, rest, paracetamol - and a doctor when the strep pattern or danger signs appear.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

These overlap classical home care for throat disorders - appropriate for self-limiting illness, with the limits stated.
