Causes of vaginal infection

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Most vaginal infections come from an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria or yeast - triggered by antibiotics, diabetes, douching or tight synthetic wear - not from 'poor hygiene' as commonly blamed.

Causes of vaginal infection

The vagina is not sterile - it normally hosts a balanced community of bacteria, dominated by protective lactobacilli that keep the environment slightly acidic and hostile to troublemakers. Infection is what happens when that balance breaks. Understanding this removes the biggest myth: that these infections come from being "unclean."

The three common infections and their causes:

  • Candida (fungal/yeast infection): overgrowth of Candida, a yeast normally present in small numbers. Triggered by antibiotic courses (which kill the protective bacteria), uncontrolled diabetes (sugar feeds yeast), pregnancy hormones, steroid use, and synthetic tight clothing that traps moisture.
  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV): not a single invader but a shift in balance - protective lactobacilli fall and other bacteria overgrow. Triggered by douching, new or multiple sexual partners (it is associated with sexual activity but is not a classic STI), and sometimes no clear trigger.
  • Trichomoniasis: a true sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite (Trichomonas vaginalis) - passed between partners, which is why the partner needs treatment too.

What disturbs the balance (the real "causes"):

  • Douching and overwashing - washing inside the vagina or using scented soaps/washes strips the protective bacteria. This is crucial: excessive "hygiene" causes infections, it does not prevent them.
  • Antibiotics - kill good bacteria along with bad
  • Tight synthetic underwear and pads worn too long - heat and moisture
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Hormonal states - pregnancy, sometimes the contraceptive pill

What does NOT cause these infections: eating "heaty" foods, not bathing daily, public toilet seats (skin contact does not transmit vaginal infection), and "weakness" or "heat in the body" in the folk sense.

Remember: imbalance, antibiotics, diabetes, douching and trapped moisture cause most infections - and only trichomoniasis is sexually transmitted. Overwashing causes problems; gentle external washing is all that is needed.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Ayurveda discusses abnormal discharge under Shweta Pradara/Yoni Vyapad, attributing it to dosha imbalance. A descriptive parallel - the specific organisms and the protective-bacteria balance are modern findings that decide the actual treatment.
