How to treat or cure vaginal infection

Introductory summary
Curing a vaginal infection means matching medicine to organism - a swab test when in doubt, full courses completed, partner treated for trichomoniasis, and diabetes investigated for recurrent fungal infections.
How to treat or cure vaginal infection
Most vaginal infections are straightforwardly curable - the failures come from treating the wrong organism or stopping treatment early. The cure path:
Step 1 - Identify the organism (this is the whole game):
- Symptoms give strong clues (curd-like + itch = candida; grey + fishy = BV; yellow-green = trichomoniasis), but when symptoms are mixed, severe, pregnant or recurrent, a vaginal swab for microscopy and culture names the organism exactly. Ten minutes of testing beats three wrong creams.
Step 2 - The matched medicine, completed fully:
- Candida → antifungal (vaginal clotrimazole/miconazole or oral fluconazole)
- BV → metronidazole or clindamycin
- Trichomoniasis → oral metronidazole/tinidazole plus simultaneous partner treatment
- Full course, even when symptoms vanish in two days - half-treated infections return harder
Step 3 - Close the loops that cause recurrence:
- Recurrent candida (4+ episodes/year): blood-sugar testing, a 6-month doctor-supervised suppressive schedule, and review of antibiotic use
- Recurrent BV: discuss longer management strategies with the gynaecologist; partner treatment is not routine for BV, but consistency of treatment completion is
- Recurrent trichomoniasis = reinfection: the partner was not treated - this is the rule, not the exception
Step 4 - Know what is NOT infection:
- Persistent "infection" that resists all treatment needs re-diagnosis: it may be atrophic change (post-menopause), a skin condition (lichen), or something that needs biopsy. Bleeding after intercourse, between periods or after menopause is never "infection" until a doctor has examined - this rule exists to catch cervical problems early.
Pregnancy: any symptomatic discharge in pregnancy gets a doctor's review and pregnancy-safe treatment - untreated infections in pregnancy can trigger early labour.
Remember: right organism, right drug, full course, partner treated when needed, sugar checked when recurrent - that is the complete cure. Everything else is a delay.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Ayurvedic care can support comfort and general health around this pathway. The curative steps - swab, organism-matched medicine, partner treatment - are modern and specific; there is no traditional shortcut through them.
