Medicines and products for vaginal infection

Introductory summary

Treatment depends on the cause: antifungals for candida (vaginal tablets or oral fluconazole), metronidazole for BV and trichomoniasis - with the partner treated for trichomoniasis; wrong guesses explain most failures.

Medicines and products for vaginal infection

Each infection type has its own medicine - this is why "the infection kit from the chemist" fails so often: it treats one organism while your symptoms come from another.

For candida (fungal infection):

  • Vaginal antifungal tablets/creams (clotrimazole, miconazole) - inserted at night for 1-7 days depending on strength; the standard first choice
  • Oral fluconazole - a single tablet for uncomplicated cases; repeated doses for recurrent cases under a doctor's plan (recurrent candida needs a 6-month suppressive schedule plus a diabetes check)
  • Note: oral fluconazole is avoided in pregnancy - vaginal options are used instead

For bacterial vaginosis:

  • Metronidazole (oral or vaginal gel) or clindamycin - specific antibiotics for this imbalance
  • No alcohol during metronidazole/tinidazole and for 48 hours after - severe reaction otherwise
  • Partners usually do not need treatment for BV

For trichomoniasis:

  • Oral metronidazole or tinidazole - and the partner must take the same treatment, otherwise reinfection is guaranteed; avoid sex until both complete treatment

Important warnings:

  • Combination "infection kits" (fluconazole + antibiotic tablets sold as one pack) treat everything blindly - fine occasionally, but if you need them repeatedly, you need a swab test and a gynaecologist, not another kit
  • Avoid steroid-containing creams without diagnosis - they quiet the itch while the infection thrives
  • Persistent or recurrent symptoms: the right step is a vaginal swab for microscopy and culture, not a third guess

Supportive products: plain emollient washes for comfort; probiotic supplements (mild supportive evidence). Vaginal dryness products and estrogen creams belong to a different condition (post-menopause) and a doctor's prescription.

Remember: antifungal for candida, metronidazole-family for BV and trichomoniasis (with partner treatment for the latter), no alcohol with those antibiotics - and recurrence means testing, not re-guessing.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Traditional remedies cannot distinguish Candida from Gardnerella from Trichomonas - the swab can, and the medicines above are organism-specific. Adjunct comfort is possible; organism-targeted treatment is essential.
