Ayurvedic treatment for varicose veins

Introductory summary
Ayurveda offers oils, herbs and leech therapy for varicose veins - comfort measures at best; no traditional treatment repairs valves, while compression stockings and modern ablation actually treat the disease.
Ayurvedic treatment for varicose veins
Ayurveda names a comparable condition - Siraja Granthi - and offers external applications, oral herbs and, in classical texts, jalaukavacharana (leech therapy). The honest assessment of each against what the disease actually is - mechanical valve failure - matters for expectations.
What traditional practice offers:
- External oils and lepa (pastes): massages with medicated oils are commonly marketed for varicose veins. Gentle massage may ease heaviness temporarily, but deep or vigorous massage over varicose veins is not advisable - fragile surface veins and possible clots make aggressive rubbing risky.
- Oral herbs: guggulu preparations, punarnava and triphala variants are prescribed traditionally for circulation and swelling; evidence for reversing varicose veins is absent - at best, mild symptomatic support.
- Leech therapy (jalaukavacharana): classical and still practised; leeches remove local congested blood and their saliva has anticoagulants. It may temporarily relieve congestion discomfort but does nothing to the failed valves - and it carries infection and bleeding risks that require genuine clinical hygiene, not a roadside setup.
The honest limits: no Ayurvedic treatment repairs a failed vein valve or closes a varicose vein. Compression stockings control symptoms mechanically; laser, radiofrequency and sclerotherapy close the faulty vein definitively. Skin darkening, ulcers and bleeding risk progress while waiting on oils.
A sensible combination:
- Compression stockings and leg habits do the controlling
- Gentle traditional comfort measures (light oil application, elevation routines) may accompany - never deep massage
- A venous Doppler and specialist opinion decide whether the vein needs closing
- Skin changes or ulcers = modern vein care, urgently - this is where delay converts manageable disease into chronic wounds
Remember: oils may comfort, stockings control, and ablation cures the faulty segment - leeches and herbs do not reach the valve. Choose comfort honestly and treatment accurately.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Siraja Granthi chikitsa is a comfort tradition. The disease is a plumbing fault; the fixes are mechanical (compression) and structural (ablation). Both truths can be told without diminishing either system.
